Is it difficult for you to sleep sometimes? Scientists have found a simple way to help you sleep: write a to-do list.
A team of scientists in Texas studied 57 people between the ages of 19 and 30. They divided them into two groups. They asked both groups to write something before they went to bed.
The first group wrote a to-do list – a list of things that they had to do in the future; for example, buy something, write an email or phone somebody. The second group wrote a list of things that they had finished or done recently.
Both groups slept in the lab, and the scientists studied how they slept. The first group, who wrote the to-do list, fell asleep after 16 minutes. The second group fell asleep after 25 minutes.
The leader of the research team explained, “Our lives are very busy. Sometimes we don’t have time to finish things. So when we go to bed we are worried and we think about all the things we have to do. This is a problem, because then we can’t sleep.”
The study shows that if we write a to-do list before we go to bed, we can relax and stop worrying and then we sleep better.
About 51% of people sometimes have problems with sleeping. This is a simple way to help them to fall asleep sooner.
